Uploading Files on Schedule

It may be helpful to upload content to a TelVue Princeton™ server or your TelVue CloudCast™ account on a set schedule, for instance to take advantage of low-bandwidth times during late hours.

One program that can accomplish this is SyncBack from 2BrightSparks. Below are some steps that will help you setup SyncBack to FTP a folder of content to your TelVue® CloudCast™ account on whatever schedule you set.

First-Time Use

  1. Download the freeware version of SyncBack and install it.
  2. When you start SyncBack for the first time, it will first ask you what type of profile you want to create. Select “Backup” as the profile type.
  3. It will then prompt you for a name. Type a name such as “Send to CloudCast”.
  4. You will be in Simple mode. A callout balloon should bring your attention to the option for Advanced Mode. Activate Advanced Mode.
  5. You start on the “Simple” tab, using the default selection of “Backup the source directory’s files, including all its sub-directories”.

Set Up the FTP Destination

  1. Click on the FTP tab. Check the checkbox that says “The destination directory is on an FTP server”, fill in the hostname with “origin.peg.tv”, and enter your username and your password for the username and password.
  2. Uncheck the box that says “Passive (may be required if using a firewall)”. When you are done your results should look something like this.
  3. Use the “Test FTP Settings” button on the FTP tab to verify the settings are working.
  4. Once the above steps are done, click the folder icon next to the Destination box. It will ask if you want to connect to the FTP server. When you select “yes”, it will show you the folders on the FTP server. Select where you want this content to go. If you want the content in your root folder select OK in the box showing you the ftp folders on the remote machine. The Destination box should read “” when you are complete.

Set the Source

  1. Click the folder icon next to the Source box to select which source folder you want to watch on your local system.
  2. Set to run in the background:
  3. SyncBack has two methods to run on a schedule: you can set a Windows Task Manager schedule for it, or you can set it to run continuously in the background on an interval. The former method is a good fit if you only want to sync once per day. The latter method is a good fit if you want to watch the folder continuously.
  4. The “Misc” tab is where you can set as schedule. SyncBack will walk you through setting that schedule. Provide your login information to the Windows Task Scheduler, and SyncBack will walk you through that as well, even giving you the option to remove the requirement in Windows to have a password for scheduled tasks. Use the Windows Task Scheduler window to enter your planned schedule. SyncBack reports back what you entered so that you can double-check it, and you can edit it again from the “Misc” tab if need be.
  5. Set the job to run at 1:00 AM or another time when your internet connection is not being heavily used by you or anyone else.

Set Other Options

  1. Set other options if you like, such as emailing you if the job does not work.
  2. On the “Misc” tab, check “Display log after running a profile”, so a web page will pop up in the event of an error. (You may opt to turn this off. You can browse the log of the job at any time from the SyncBack interface.)

Ready to Run

  1. Click “OK” at the bottom of the profile screen to go to the main jobs screen.
  2. From this screen, under the Preferences menu, there a few useful options, such as restarting SyncBack when Windows starts, and insuring that when you minimize the program goes to the system tray (which is the default).
  3. You can minimize the program and leave it running. If you need to see the log for the job you can double-click the icon in the system tray and then right-click on the job to see the log information.
  4. SyncBack does not need to be running for your scheduled task to run. Windows will start it. If SyncBack is running it will not interfere with your other processes, and you have quick access to the results of the last run.

Note on Folder Setup:
When you have a SyncBack job setup this way, any files in your source folder that are not in the destination folder (wherever you select on origin.peg.tv) will be moved every time the job runs. However, any file not in the source that is in the destination will not be removed. Thus, once you verify that a file is uploaded to TelVue® CloudCast™ and working 100% successfully, you do not need to keep it in your source folder (though you may want to keep your own backup of your content). You can keep the file in you selected source folder. SyncBack will not try to resend the same file.
