Trim Content (Built-in, Multiple Trim Editing)

The Trim Content tool allows creating multiple trim points throughout the content and then re-rendering to either replace the current file or create a new content record. This is useful when you want to destructively trim content or need more than just virtually trimming the beginning and end. For example, the Trim Content tool can be used to remove an executive session from the middle of a meeting, or remove ads throughout a program. The easy-to-use, built-in, Trim Content tool offers a convenience compared to using an external editor for simple trimming.

Add one or more Trim Points by clicking the add HyperCaster Add Iconaction. The new trim point will be added to the Trim Points table and will be selected and highlighted. You can now manually enter In and Out time codes in HH:MM:SS.MMM format, or use the video Preview window to set an In and Out point. The video Preview window requires that a preview has been created for the content.

HC Trim Content

The Preview window allows finding and setting the desired In and Out points for the selected Trim Point with the following actions:

  • Use the play and pause buttons as needed to start and pause the video. The audio/mute, CC/captions, picture-in-picture, and full screen actions work just like preview players throughout the application.
  • Use the slider bar to scrub through the video. To aid in visually scrubbing, the HyperCaster will create Sprite images in the background for content after a preview is created. When the Sprites are available, you’ll see thumbnails with timecode as you scrub through.
  • Use the << and >> double arrows to Step Backward or Forward 5 seconds at a time respectively.
  • Use the < and > single arrows to Step Backward or Forward 1 seconds at a time respectively.
  • Click the Set Current In Point button to set the current location as the In Point for the selected Trim Point. Be sure the intended Trim Point is selected and highlighted in the Trim Point Table before setting the In Point.
  • Click the Set Current Out Point button to set the current location as the Out Point for the selected Trim Point. Be sure the intended Trim Point is selected and highlighted in the Trim Point Table before setting the Out Point.
  • Once and In and Out Point is set for a Trim Point, that region will be highlighted in green on the slider bar indicating that the region will be preserved when trimmed.
  • You can select on which Trim Point you are working in the Preview window by clicking on that Trim Point’s radio dialog selection in the Trim Point table.
  • Clicking the magnifying glass icon next to any set In or Out point in the Trim Point table will jog the Preview location directly to that timecode.
  • Click the Delete All Trim Points button to remove all Trim Points from the Trim Points table, i.e. to start fresh.
  • Click the Preview button to preview how all of your trims will look before rendering the trimmed content. This will bring up a video player in a modal dialog where you can preview how your trim edits will look.

Click the Save button to save your Trim Points so if you leave the page and later return, the Trim Points are preserved. Note that simply clicking Save does not yet actually trim the content.

To actually trim the content, click the pull-down arrow alongside the Save button and pick from the two available options:

  • Trim and Replace will re-render the content and when complete, the existing content file be REPLACED by the rendered, trimmed version. This means the existing content is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered, so make sure you have a backup someplace! If you had previously scheduled the original content, this will behave just like a replacement file with the updated file being shorter in duration.
  • Trim and Create New will re-render the content in the background and when complete, a new content file record will be created with the trimmed version, with a unique filename “Trimmed Copy of <original filename>”. The new content file will copy over the same metadata and category settings as the original. The existing content file is left intact with the original, un-trimmed file, and will also preserve the Trim Points in case you want to re-edit or make additional renditions in the future. Trim and Create New is normally recommended to make sure you are happy with the results before deleting the original. If you had previously scheduled the original file, you will need to update your scheduling to use the new file, such as swapping out Series Episodes, bulk updating events etc… Alternatively, you could then use the replacement file hot folder copying the newly created file with the original filename in the hotfolder to only destructively replace the original once you are sure you are happy with the trimming results and will not need to revisit.

In both cases, the trimming rendering operates in the background and will show as a Transcode task in the Tasks tab along with progress. During the rendering, the content is decoded at the trim points, and then re-encoded. If your system only supports the default Transcode Preset, that will be used for the trimmed, transcoded file. If your system supports multiple Transcode Presets, such as with the Pro Transcoding feature, you will be presented with a dialog to select the desired Transcode Preset to use for the trimmed file.

HC Trim Content Select Transcode

Trimming will always render sequentially based on In and Out time, so even if your Trim Points are out of order in the table, the trimming will remain sequential. Trimming will preserve any embedded captioning, and any sidecar Primary and Secondary caption files will also be trimmed to preserve synchronization with the content.
