Have you ever had a problem with your workflow that could be traced back to a bad filename?

An unacceptable character in a filename can throw off a variety of operating systems and devices. That’s why we offer these tips to playing it safe when naming your directory or files.

Naming conventions are important as well when importing files to TelVue Connect or HyperCasters. Please avoid using these common illegal characters/symbols:

# pound   < left angle bracket   $ dollar sign  + plus sign
% percent    > right angle bracket   ! exclamation point `  backtick
& ampersand  * asterisk    ‘ single quotes    | pipe
{ left bracket   ? question mark    “ double quotes    = equal sign
} right bracket  / forward slash   : colon , comma
\ back slash   @ at sign

Also, keep these rules in mind:

  • Don’t start or end your filename with a space, period, hyphen, or underline.
  • Keep your filenames to a reasonable length and be sure they are under 128 characters.
